Sometimes the internet just stresses me out- there’s so much to explore, and with every click I get further away from whatever it is I was supposed to be doing. At other times I let myself relax, clicking along to discover new talent without purpose or agenda, and it’s often this method that yields the best results.

Just the other day I was browsing the lovely Yvestown when I came across something I knew would be perfect for today’s post. Nina is a Dutch student, designer and craftsperson who has the loveliest Etsy shop. Working with new and vintage finds, she hand-paints ceramics, screen-prints, collages and takes photographs. Here are some of my favourite items from her shop.

I used to love making spirographs when I was little, and this spirograph bowl, made from a vintage piece, takes me back:

The lots of dots teapot has the most elegant 1960’s shape, contrasted with those fun polka-dots:

The dots and buntings sugar and creamer set might just be my favourite. I adore the shape of the pieces and the whimsical designs:

This folklore and fun breakfast set would be wonderful for a child. The traditional Dutch designs are original, while the dots and bunting are a fun addition:

There’s a wealth of design on this adorable cake plate set, from flowers to birds and bunting, too. I especially like the bright red dress on the cake plate:

Be sure to check out Nina’s blog and Flickr photostream, as well.

Actually, the light here in London is thin and waning right now, but I’m sure somewhere in the world it’s a bright sunny morning, wouldn’t you agree? If you’re not lucky enough to be there, how about checking out these cheerful vintage finds with me, instead?

I love the photo styling of this vintage gold pyrex dish from tinsel and twine:

Happy New Year! It’s a new week, and new month and a new year, and although I let things around here slide toward the end of December, I’m determined to step up my game in 2010. I’m not in the mood to focus on one shop today; my brain isn’t yet back in “working mode”. Instead, here are ten random, lovely, and covetable kitchen finds from Etsy. Enjoy!

The fantastic shop Brookish has added some new items, including these whimsical Mr. Darcy proposal dish towel:

Happy Monday! Just where did last week go, I ask you? In the midst of holiday planning, work and play, I completely forgot about my poor blog. Here’s hoping that this week will be a little less hectic for all.

I introduced MarianneClare’s Vintage Kitchen in the Vintage edition of my Holiday Gift Guide 2009, and now I want to delve a little deeper into its fab retro offerings. Check out my picks from this adorable shop below.

Retro refrigerator dishes can be so nice, and certainly make a nice change from tupperware. This Pyrex one is pretty:

I love this set of Aluminum Pitcher and Cups Set. Just look at the gorgeous wooden handle:

Holiday Gift Guide: Vintage

Welcome to the Kitchenisms Holiday Gift Guide 2009, a week-long extravaganza of cool present ideas for the holiday season. Each day has a different theme, and I try to include both stocking stuffers and big-ticket items. You’ll find a mix of new finds and favourites from the archives here, all stuff I’d love to find under the tree on the 25th!

Ahh, vintage. My most popular tag and one of my favourite looks- for fashion, decor, you name it. While vintage shopping for the holidays might seem akin to “re-gifting”, there’s no rule that presents have to be new, is there? Something pre-owned and pre-loved is often the best bet, particularly for stylish foodies. Here are my favourite picks for the vintage-loving-bunch on your shopping list.

Anyone’s first stop for affordable vintage should be Etsy. I think this set of 5 Cream Vera Napkin Rings from High Street Market would make a great gift:

I love the retro colour of this Pyrex Old Orchard Mixing Bowl from MarianneClare’s Vintage Kitchen:

Old kitchen scales make a great decorative touch in the kitchen (I’ve got one myself). Betty’s Kitschen has a nice Vintage Hanson Scale, and it’s also functional:

As any home baker knows, certain items only get better with age. Why not choose one of these Vintage Rolling Pins from Re-found Objects:

From the same source, this retro French Glass Butter Dish has been on my personal “want” list or years:

Since the signage trend shows no signs of abating, this Metal Pantry Sign would fit right in in a stylish kitchen:

I’ve featured the UK-based Pedlars here before, but their vintage section is so good it deserves another look at this time of year. These 1930’s and 1940’s Seltzer Bottles are gorgeous, and what a great way to beautify your kitchen:

The Wine Cooler/Holder is a good example of re-purposed vintage; it’s been made from one of those old bottles:

The American Three Potato Four shop is also a great source for vintage home and decor items. One of my favourites is this Therm Ware Carafe, in great condition and still with its original top:

These vintage-inspired Ceramic Ruled Pitchers are particularly cute, and would work for milk or cream, or even as vases:

I also really like these General Store Fruit & Veg Can Blanks, which would make great retro storage for baking supplies:

At the end of my holiday last month, I spent a night with my grandmother before flying home. I was in interiors heaven: my Grandma’s condo is a trove of mid-century modern design. (I teased her about how it looks like she went on a buying spree in the 60’s, and hasn’t bought anything since.)

Something I especially took a shine to was her collection of retro kitchenware, specifically a Dansk water jug in a cheerful yellow hue. This American-owned, Danish-designed brand was huge in the 60’s and 70’s, and is still in existence today, though sadly the iconic Kobenstyle line is out of production.

Luckily we can still find it, and other great Dansk pieces, on Etsy. Here are some of my favourite Dansk finds from everyone’s favourite global marketplace.

This red Kobenstyle Paella Pan sold by Uncommon Eye is just lovely, and in great condition:

The classic Casserole in that gorgeous yellow, from modapple:

I love the colour of this Enamelware Percolator, from LemonLimeVintage:

Fondue parties may be lost to the ages, but maybe whoever buys this adorable Fondue Pot and Stand from Bettyninja Finds can bring them back:

These White Teacups and Saucers look more modern to me, but just as covetable. From ravenna Girls Vintage:

Pedlars

Several weeks ago, I was browsing in Selfridges when I came across an small area, near the kitchen shop, which was laden with cool housewares, accessories and vintage pieces. It turns out to be a Pedlars concession, which opened in July of this year. Pedlars is a family-owned interiors company based in Scotland, with shops in London, Birmingham and Wales. They carry a mix of new items and vintage, all with a quirky charm and trendy feel.

I urge you to check our their online shop, which is full to bursting with great products for you and your home. Here are some of my favourites, all from the kitchen section (naturally) of the site.

I like the retro kitsch factor of oil cloth tablecloths, and this one is made perfectly modern with a trendy deer print:

Pedlars

There’s something utterly fabulous about this Gold Ice Cream Bowl and Spoon. I’d love to eat anything out of it, to be honest:

Pedlars

I like that these Coloured Knives come with guards, always useful for those of us who store such things in a drawer:

Pedlars

This porcelain Flour Bag Container would look great next to the stove, holding wooden spoons and other utensils:

Pedlars

I like the look of this retro Wall Mounted Bottle Opener. I’d like to have one outside (if I had an outside) for barbeques and such:

Pedlars

My favourite item might just be this traditional Oak Roller Towel Holder. What a great accessory for a modern-retro kitchen:

Etsy find: Slow Lane Lost & Found

Happy Monday, everybody!

Let’s kick off the week with some Etsy goodness, shall we? Slow Lane is a shop which sells “retro and vintage finds for happy spaces”. The selection is small but well-edited, and I’m loving some of their kitchen and decor items.

I immediately fell for these retro mugs. The mix of colours is gorgeous, so while they’re sold individually, I’d take the lot:

Slow Lane

This set of four mini bowls is lovely, I especially like the coloured insides:

Slow Lane

I love these vintage glass decanters for liquor; they’d be perfect for my home bar. They come with two double-sided “necklaces” to appropriately mark the contents:

Slow Lane

My parents have a set of 60’s glass dessert bowls a bit like these. I used to think they were hideous, but I’d happily take them now:

Etsy finds: kitchen clocks

One thing every kitchen needs is a big ol’ clock on the wall. Luckily, whether your style is minimal industrial or vintage kitsch, there’s one that fits the bill on Etsy. Check out a few of my favourites here.

Made from an old clay pigeon target, I like this bright wall clock from A Well Dressed Bullet:

PILOTdesign makes loads of modern clocks, but my favourite is the simple Petal Links design:

In terms of vintage, I love this school clock from Mary and Grace. Circa 1960, it’s a style that can go from sleek to retro in a second:

The victorienne clock from uncommon is one of my favourites. The ornate needles stand out on the simple background, which comes in nine colours:
