Etsy Find: the fox and the spoon

I was all set to post some lovely modern art on today’s Etsy Find when I stumbled across vintage kitchenware shop the fox and the spoon, and decided to change course. I know, I’m so predictable, but at least I know what I like. If you, too, like retro style and lovely images, enjoy!

From top: milk glass bud vase, teapot, tea and dessert setting, cake stand, flour sifter, aluminum cups.

Etsy find: 5gardenias vintage

It’s been a while since I posted some vintage lovliness here, so this morning seemed like a perfect chance to share my latest Etsy find, 5gardenias vintage. This Buffalo, US-based shop sells a sweet mix of homewares, decor and accessories, all styled and photographed beautifully.

I’m obsessed with the Danish Modern Covered Casserole, in the last image. What about you- see anything you like?

Holiday Gift Guide 2010… Something Vintage

Today is my favourite day this week, because we’re wrapping up retro in the 2010 Holiday Gift Guide. No, not everybody needs vintage in their life, but doesn’t everyone want some? Some of these items are pretty, some are practical, but all are 100% vintage fun. Have a look and let me know what tickles your fancy…

1. Dansk Kobenstyle Enamel Sauté Pan from Blue Flower Vintage; 2. Vintage Enameled Gas Station Lighting Fixture from Barking Sands Vintage; 3. Iittala Finland Marja glass bowls from Found Vintage Style; 4. Vintage Printed Dishtowel from Trampoline; 5. 24-Hour Telephone Industry Clock from Three Potato Four; 6. Blue Teacups from Gloaming Designs; 7. Modern White Teapot from Hindsvik; 8. Old Willow Candlestick from Loglike; 9. Metal Milk Crate from French by Design; 10. Laughlin Harlequin yellow pitcher from High Street Market

Cool Kitchen: Lofty Mismatch

Mixing and matching different decor styles has become so de rigueur over the past decade that these days, it’s difficult to find any room that’s 100% one look. But some spaces do the mismatched look better than others. The trick is creating a mix so subtle that it becomes its own style.

This kitchen, in a Manhatten loft space and found via Martha Stewart Living, is a great example of blurred design lines. The vertical wainscotting, whitewashed floor and striped rug say welcoming country kitchen, but the ceiling-height shelving (complete with library ladder) is pure elegance. There’s even a hint of retro- check out that cute vintage stove in the corner!

Other great details include the small framed pieces of art (I love the one over the sink) and the dining chairs. All in the same style, each one is a different colour; if you look closely, you’ll see that those colours repeated elsewhere in the kitchen’s accessories, too. A great way to tie these seemingly disparate looks together.

Etsy find: Tara’s Vintage Kitchen

Happy Monday, and if you’re in North America, Happy Labour Day! Here in the UK, the holiday weekend was last week, so today’s post will go right along as usual…

Tara’s Vintage Kitchen falls into one of my favourite Etsy categories, one I like to call “gorgeously styled vintage goodness”. She’s got everything from linens to bakeware to cookbooks in her shop, but it’s the wonderful photos that do me in. Check it out:

Cool Kitchen: Red n’ Retro

Hello, and Happy Tuesday to you! I was away yesterday at a freelance job, which may end up eating up some other days this week, too. But I’m here now, and have another cool kitchen from The Kitchn that I’d like to share.

Matt and Blair’s Fresh Retro Kitchen caught my eye when it was posted back in April. The colour scheme of red, aqua, black and white is pure retro, but looks fresh to the modern eye. The other details have the same classic-but-current vibe; the white goods, gorgeous original sink, and cheerful patterned curtains. The fact that this space is flooded with light is the icing on the cake.

For more photos, Matt and Blair blogged the complete renovation of their house at Tulane Rehab.

Etsy find: Blue Flower Vintage

Blue Flower Vintage on Etsy is such a cute shop. I love it not only for its great selection of retro home- and kitchenware, but also for the charming product shots that its owners create. Care to adopt one of these fab items on this Monday morning?

1. Lotus Ware Bowl; 2. 4 Finnish Linen Placemats; 3. Catherine Holm Dutch Oven; 4. Rorstrand Sweden Tea Cup; 5. Dru Holland Cast Iron Frying Pan; 6. Copco Enameled Saute Pan.

Cool Kitchen: Melbourne Warehouse

I haven’t posted a cool kitchen in a while, and there’s no time like the present to rectify that. Soon after opening the August issue of Living etc, I fell head over heels for the home of textile designer Diane Bergeron and her family. Located in an old Melbourne warehouse building, inside it’s about as un-warehouse as you can get. Colourful, elegant, feminine and quirky are all adjectives that come to mind here.

Melbourne Warehouse

The kitchen is a slightly different space, though. Oh, it’s still elegant and quirky, but here is where the industrial warehouse aesthetic really shines. I love the (original!) metal door leading into the room, not to mention the vintage rolling ladder along the (cookbook?) wall. I also like the trio of retro pendant lights over the island, which together with some well-placed cast iron cookware, add colour to the room.

Overall, this is a room I’d love to cook in. It just seems so clean, bright, and user-friendly; exactly what a kitchen should be. Be sure to check out the rest of the home, too.

Etsy finds: Retro Picnic Style

It’s (almost) that time again! Who else has got picnics on the mind lately? I sure do- from portable food and refreshing drinks to retro picnic style. While the first two are up to you, check out some of my picks for the latter on that list.

Firstly, I just love this party ball picnic set, sold by modapple. It’s got plates, bowls and cups- everything you need for a stylish lunch al fresco:

If you like something a bit more compact, how about these vintage plastic lunch trays? Sold by Tracelements, they’re perfect for those who don’t like their food “touching”:

For beverages, I like this plastic thermos and soup jar set, by Junk Yard Finds:

These plastic corn on the cob holders just say summer to me- my parents had a set just like this when I was young. Sold by Find me a Memory:

Of course, you’ll need somewhere to lay it all out, and I like the look of this 60′s wool blanket from solartwin vintage:

And to pack it all up, this vintage tin picnic basket, with trompe l’oeil basket weave pattern, from Camp Hobachee:

Cool Kitchen: Kingswood House

I love browsing location-rental sites like 1st Option and Inspace, both for practical decorating inspiration and for if-I-win-the-lottery-this-week type daydreaming. Too often though the kitchens are dull. Never ugly, but too showroom bland to really get my blood racing.

Kingswood House

Not this space, though. Kingswood House from 1st Option has a great kitchen: modern and retro and strong and feminine, all at the same time. The first things I noticed were those fab industrial stools, and how well they go with the retro pistachio-coloured fridge.

Kingswood House

I love the two striped rugs in this space, too. Bold and unexpected, they keep all the pastel touches from looking too sweet. The floating units also work well. The whole feeling of this space would be somehow different if they were built-in, don’t you think?

Of course, these photos are styled to perfection- right down to the gumball machine and retro tea towel. Still, I’d have to consider this space if I do in fact win the lottery this week.

What do you think of Kingswood House?
