Cool Kitchen: Chicago Calm

I had another space in mind for today’s Cool Kitchen, but threw my plans to the wind when I saw this kitchen in a Design*Sponge Sneak Peek yesterday. From the home of Chicago-based photographer Emily Anderson, it’s got all the elements I love in a kitchen: warm wood, modern functionality, a few quirky details and a peaceful ambience. Sure, you can’t see the whole space, but I think these photos do a great job of telling the story.

Emily’s whole apartment is gorgeous, so be sure to check out all the photos here.

Happy Friday! Check out this lovely pair of pics from Catskills Grrl‘s Green Cottage set. I must still be in the cottage mood, because I’m seriously loving these.

Cool Kitchen: Green, coastal mod

I don’t usually read Coastal Living, but now and then I like to browse their site for design inspiration. The featured homes always have a charming, homespun, Cape Cod sort of feel, but every so often I’ll find something surprising.

Case in point: this contemporary kitchen. Not only do I love the colour of the cabinets (I know, so predicable), but I like the fun use of typography, too. The fact that the floors and countertops are the same colour keeps things streamlined horizontally, and stops the ceiling-height cabinets from taking over the space. The pendant lights and hints of red are also great, though I could pass on the crazy paneled ceiling.

Cool Kitchen: Grey Industrial

Yesterday The Kitchn blogged about a Washington, DC space that was so cool, I couldn’t resist sharing it here. (It’s actually just a pantry and not a full-on kitchen, but the decor would be easily used in either.)

Since my post last week about black kitchens, I’ve been gravitating more toward darker rooms with pop. This space definitely fits the bill: white trim and colourful art against moody grey walls. I love the industrial bookcases and filing cabinets: technically in the dining room, they really seem part of the space.

Cool Kitchen: Dwell July/August

We’re still waiting for the July/August issue of Dwell to hit our doorstep here in London, and frankly, it’s beginning to irritate me. Sick of the suspense, I headed over to their website this morning to see what I’ve been missing. What I found was a slideshow and article about the LA home of architect Jeremy Levine. The style is SoCol Spanish meets ultra-modern, and I love what I see:

Besides the obviously wonderful combination of warm wood, crisp white and touches of black, I think this kitchen works so well because of all the horizontal and vertical lines at play. The wooden ceiling and floor increase the sense of horizontal space, but thanks to all the tall, white-framed cupboards, the feeling isn’t at all stifling. I like all the built-in nooks and shelves, which are not only practical, but draw your eye across the width of the room.

Cool Kitchen: Viteo Outdoors

While most outdoor kitchens are hideously tacky in a depressing, McMansion sort of way, I do love the idea of them. One day, I’d love to have a wood-burning pizza oven in my backyard, with loads of space for friends to gather. Until then, I’d settle for this modern mobile version, from Italian company VITEO. The range is modular and includes options for a BBQ, a sink, and loads of counter space. (And, thankfully, a decided lack of faux-aged stone.)

Anyone who knows me will tell you that my favourite colour is green, and that a green-and-white kitchen with wooden countertops and stainless steel appliances is my heart’s desire. Check out these inspirational images of gorgeous green kitchens.

Look: Boffi Mini-kitchen!

This compact trolly kitchen by Boffi is the 2006 re-issue of Joe Colombo’s iconic 1963 Carrelone design. In a space measuring just 3′ x 2′ x 3′, it manages to include a hot plate, 50 lt. refrigerator, electrical sockets, various drawers and storage compartments, a chopping board and a pull-out worktop.
