Cool Kitchen: Luxe Utility in Stockholm

Good Tuesday Morning, everyone! Today is the first day of my working week, as yesterday was a Bank Holiday here in the UK. Let’s kick things off with a dose of kitchen gorgossity, shall we?

I’m quite taken with this space from Swedish mag Hus & Hem. Insofar as I can tell (you know, not being able to read Swedish), it’s the Stockholm apartment of Jonas, a photographer, and Cattis, a stylist. But I don’t need to read Swedish to understand that this couple and their home has style in spades; the kitchen alone is worthy of of a magazine feature.

Though a bit more utilitarian and spare than I normally gravitate to, this kitchen is fab in all kinds of ways. I love how the metal shelving serves as a freestanding wall of sorts, separating the kitchen from the dining space. That unit, and the one over the sink, turn ordinary bottles, plates and glasses into a display feature, yet the space doesn’t appear busy. Instead, it’s unified by a simple colour scheme of black, white, grey, metal and wood.

That simplicity hides some seriously luxe finishes, too. Those aren’t just marble countertops, but marble backsplashes. The lighting and well-considered seating (both at the bar and the dining table) both speak of elegance, as well. Sigh- it seems like the Swedes just do everything well, don’t you think?

Cool Kitchen: Oak Street Sophisticated

I haven’t featured a cool kitchen from Flickr in a while, so I was thrilled to stumble across this one from reebob‘s Oak Street set last week. To me this looks like a kitchen makeover done right: the space treads a perfect line between modern and traditional.

Painting the lower units grey and the upper ones white creates a sense of space here; your eye is drawn upwards. This monochromatic colour scheme continues with the stainless steel appliances, grey striped rug and white pendant light. Of course, the hardwood floors, chic subway tile and marble countertops don’t hurt the sophistication factor, either.

Cool Kitchen: Grey Industrial

Yesterday The Kitchn blogged about a Washington, DC space that was so cool, I couldn’t resist sharing it here. (It’s actually just a pantry and not a full-on kitchen, but the decor would be easily used in either.)

Since my post last week about black kitchens, I’ve been gravitating more toward darker rooms with pop. This space definitely fits the bill: white trim and colourful art against moody grey walls. I love the industrial bookcases and filing cabinets: technically in the dining room, they really seem part of the space.

Cool Kitchen: Grey in L.A.

When I’m craving inspiration of the interior kind, I love browsing the Sneak Peeks over at Design*Sponge. There’s never a shortage of girly, vintage-inspired Brooklyn kitchens to feast my eyes on. Every now and then, though, you come across something entirely different- like the slightly masculine LA loft of jewelry designer Melissa McClure

I love how the stainless steel shelves and white stove look against the grey walls- restrained but impactful at the same time. With this subdued colour scheme, even the open shelving and knickknacks on the stove don’t look like clutter. The addition of few red items here and there ends up looking like a purposeful design decision. Lovely, no?

Cool Kitchen: Martha’s Cantitoe Corners

I know Martha isn’t the first person who comes to mind when you think “cool”, but stay with me. The Kitchn‘s post on grey kitchens earlier this month had me thinking about this versatile shade, and I think few do it better than Martha did at her Cantitoe Corners farm in Bedford, NY.

I think the warm shade she chose works especially well, as do all the accents of white, beige and stainless steel. The immaculate open shelving doesn’t hurt, either.
