Cool Kitchen: Blue and red and white (oh my)

It’s been a while since I shamelessly stole a cool kitchen out from under The Kitchn‘s nose, so let’s rectify that, shall we? Posted on the super-site just yesterday, Tim & Sarah’s Blue and Red Philidelphia Kitchen jumped right out at me, for obvious reasons. People, it’s blue and red.

Cool Kitchen: Blue and red and white (oh my)

As much as I love my clean white kitchens, this place just puts a smile on my face. The combo of light blue and dark red isn’t so much “Stars and Stripes” to my eyes as reminiscent of Cath Kidston, queen of retro prints. These colours are perfect for this space’s retro theme, carried through by the vintage-style appliances and bright red accessories. I also love the subtle patterns at play here- see how the mini-tile backsplash interacts with the striped tea towel?

Cool Kitchen: Oak Street Sophisticated

I haven’t featured a cool kitchen from Flickr in a while, so I was thrilled to stumble across this one from reebob‘s Oak Street set last week. To me this looks like a kitchen makeover done right: the space treads a perfect line between modern and traditional.

Painting the lower units grey and the upper ones white creates a sense of space here; your eye is drawn upwards. This monochromatic colour scheme continues with the stainless steel appliances, grey striped rug and white pendant light. Of course, the hardwood floors, chic subway tile and marble countertops don’t hurt the sophistication factor, either.

Colour in the kitchen: Red

Red is a natural choice for a kitchen. Symbolizing life and passion, it creates an energetic space, and apparently stimulates the appetite as well. Personally, I find too much red makes me a tad crazy, but I love it for details. Here are some of my favourite red kitchens from around the web.

The paint lends the colour in this retro kitchen from Living etc, meaning it can be changed on a whim:

Again from Living etc, this is red my way. Retro-modern details in a neutral space:

Colour in the kitchen: Purple

Purple is probably my least favourite hue on the colour wheel, but even I’d deign to cook in some of these lovely spaces. An unusual choice for a kitchen, perhaps, but purple is surprisingly versatile, and definitely makes a statement.

Flickr finds: green kitchens

Anyone who knows me will tell you that my favourite colour is green, and that a green-and-white kitchen with wooden countertops and stainless steel appliances is my heart’s desire. Check out these inspirational images of gorgeous green kitchens.

I was searching Flickr for pics of people’s refrigerator doors when I came across this photo, of an artists’ community/squat in Lille, France. Not really kitchen-related in itself, but I love the colour scheme that’s going on here. From ljcybergal.
