Cool Kitchen: “Fade-Away” DIY

Fade Away DIY

I found this kitchen and accompanying article a couple weeks ago, but I don’t remember exactly where. It’s the home of HGTV‘s Kristen Cunningham, an LA rental which Cunningham and her husband renovated on a budget, including $1000 for the kitchen. While it’s not the most exciting room I’ve ever seen, this black-and-white beauty is a perfect example of what I call fade-away design.

Fade-Away DIY

I don’t mean fade away in a negative way; not everyone is a foodie, after all. In a small, open-plan apartment, sometimes there just isn’t room for the kitchen to become the “heart of the home”. Sometimes, you want it to blend seamlessly with the rest of the house. The neutral colour scheme here is continued through the other rooms (see the pics for examples), but the space isn’t without some interesting touches. I particularly like the ruffled skirt under the stove and the wainscotting all around- both of which serve to give this city home a farmhouse feeling.

I love seeing rental renovations. I’m not sure I’d spend $1000 redoing a rental kitchen but I always like to see what people do with smaller amounts of money.
