Cool Kitchen: Sophie Dahl’s Rustic & Feminine

Hello, everyone! I haven’t been around here in a whole week, as I’m sure some of you have noticed ;) I spent the weekend relaxing in the country, and took off a few days on either side to make it more of a “real” vacation. Easing back into the swing of things, I’ve spent the past half hour relaxing in front of my new favourite TV show- Miss Dahl’s Voluptuous Delights. Ex-model, novelist and now celebrity chef Sophie Dahl is a sort of young Nigella in the kitchen: gorgeous, cheeky, and talented.

It’s not just the recipes that have me captivated, though. Sophie’s kitchen is a vision of rustic femininity: all white tile, weathered wooden countertops, exotic green wallpaper and retro accessories. After a bit of research, I found out that it’s actually the home of UK photographer Paul Massey, and has been featured in Living etc magazine! And what do you know, I’ve featured it here before:

This room is one of my favourites that I’ve ever featured on this site. The bare, minimalist bones are good enough, but check it out all Sophied up:

And in all it’s live-action glory, including wallpaper and art:

Are you swooning yet?

Cool Kitchen: Blue and red and white (oh my)

It’s been a while since I shamelessly stole a cool kitchen out from under The Kitchn‘s nose, so let’s rectify that, shall we? Posted on the super-site just yesterday, Tim & Sarah’s Blue and Red Philidelphia Kitchen jumped right out at me, for obvious reasons. People, it’s blue and red.

Cool Kitchen: Blue and red and white (oh my)

As much as I love my clean white kitchens, this place just puts a smile on my face. The combo of light blue and dark red isn’t so much “Stars and Stripes” to my eyes as reminiscent of Cath Kidston, queen of retro prints. These colours are perfect for this space’s retro theme, carried through by the vintage-style appliances and bright red accessories. I also love the subtle patterns at play here- see how the mini-tile backsplash interacts with the striped tea towel?

Fab Finds: Six Great Blogs

Instead of talking about kitchens today, I thought I’d share some of my recent blog finds with you. There are so many out there that the blogosphere can be overwhelming at times, and I know I’m guilty of sometimes shutting it out, and sticking instead to my tried-and-true reads. But a new blog can be like a new friend- exciting and nurturing- so I like to get out there and “meet” some now and then.

The six blogs I’m sharing today were all found via the blogging class I recently took. Blogging Your Way by Holly Becker and Leslie Shewring was a fantastic course on creative and inspirational blogging, and my fellow students ranged from food bloggers to fashion bloggers, design bloggers to business bloggers. It was hard to choose just six for this post, but I think I’ve found a little something for everyone.

1. going home to roost

Six Great Blogs

I’ve mentioned going home to roost once before, but Bonnie’s fab blog is full of great content, so forgive me for being redundant. I’m a big fan of her weekly Etsy Shop Help series, as well as her thoughts on everything from the femivore movement to fashion.

2. Carrots and Kids

Six Great Blogs

Carrots and Kids is a blog primarily about gardening in the English countryside, with a bit of family, photography and crafting thrown in. Deb writes with a wit and candour that I love, and her Feel Good Friday series has become a must-read for me.

3. Amateur with an Apron

Six Great Blogs

Lisa’s blog is a food blog with a difference: she doesn’t cook with gluten, dairy or soy. You might think, what’s the point?, but you’d be wrong. I’m in love with the concept of her S’mores Cake, and plan to make the Chocolate Chip Pumpkin Muffins soon.

4. Making it Lovely

Six Great Blogs
Making it Lovely is already quite well-known in design blog land, but it’s one I had to include here. Nicole has been blogging about the transformation of her home since 2007, and intersperses that with posts on style, organization and general beautifying. Plus, she named her daughter Eleanor, so you know she’s got good taste ;)

5. Penelope Loves Lists

Six Great Blogs
The tagline “Inspiration for the Unapologetically Organized Soul” just about sums up this lovely blog. With a focus on covetable stationary and obsessive organizing, woven together by funny and readable prose, this is the place for the mildly OCD among you.

6. Good Measure

Six Great Blogs
Good Measure is a blog about the finer things in life. Food, home, style and products all get equal coverage here. For heaven’s sake, this site even makes cleaning look good. A daily read for me.

Liberty of London for Target

As a lover of beautiful prints, posh London department stores and cheap er, affordable homewares, I was thrilled when I first heard of the Liberty of London for Target collaboration. Comprising of clothing, accessories, home decor and more, the collection is currently available in Target stores across the US, and can also be purchased online. UK residents will have to wait a bit longer, but can pre-order from Liberty or hit the Argyll Street shop on March 29th for in-store browsing. I know I’ll be there, hoping to snap up some of these gorgeous goodies:

Happy Monday! Let’s kick the week off with some covetable ceramics, shall we? You all know I’m a sucker for old-fashioned pottery, and Jason Russell‘s fits the bill perfectly. I’m digging the solid, rustic shapes and pleasing earth tones, as well as the odd splash of refreshing colour. Check out my picks from this great new shop.

Spring might be around the corner, but there’s still soup to be eaten. I’d like mine from one of these heavy soup bowls, please:

I love the colour and shape of these egg cups, too:

There’s something so lovely and retro-but-modern about these coffee mugs. I like the squat shape and the graceful dripping glaze:

Nesting bowls are always useful for prep and serving, and this striped set is pure country kitchen:

This blue serving bowl is my favourite item. The colour is to die for and the shape modern and understated:

Review: Living etc April 2010

Do you read Living etc? I do, it’s one of my favourite magazines. After moving to the UK three years ago and having a brief affair with Elle Decoration (as well as a trans-Atlantic fling with Dwell), I settled on Living etc as my UK interior love. Issue after issue, the editors get it spot-on in terms of trend coverage, decor ideas and inspirational photographs.

I was particularly thrilled with the April 2010 issue, which I picked up last week. A feature titled Kitchens for Cooks – How to plan your perfect work space was clearly going to catch my eye, and I wasn’t disappointed on reading it. I thought it might appeal to some of you kitchen-lovers, so here’s a sneak preview for you…

Living etc April 2010

Living etc April 2010

The article focuses on 12 kitchen design ideas, interspersed with useful information on choosing countertops, floors and appliances. Gorgeous photos, product comparisons and random tips (did you know it takes 10 minutes for an extractor fan to reach optimum strength?) mean the whole thing is chock-full of information.

Almost equal consideration is given to aesthetics and function, with the scale even tipping slightly toward the latter. I must say, it was refreshing to read an article that advocates keeping certain utensils, pots and pans out in plain view – you know, so you so can use them – rather than hidden away behind cupboard doors.

Of course, in typical design mag style, this article left me covetous. I’ve now added an induction range, a marble worktop section (for making pastry), and a hot water tap (to replace my space- and power-sucking kettle) to my “dream kitchen” list.

In addition to the kitchens feature, Living etc‘s April 2010 issue had some good articles. I liked all four of the house tours and a sweet editorial called Living with Heirlooms. It’s on the newstands now, so if you’re in the UK, go pick up a copy!

The Coolest Fridges

Like many appliances, fridges can sometimes get overlooked in the design process. Too often they fall into “boring, big and white” territory, doing their job but acting as the proverbial (and sometimes physical) elephant in the room. But if you think of them as an opportunity to inject some style into your kitchen, it can be a whole other story. Check out some of my favourite picks for the coolest fridges around.

First up, my all-time favourite. Smeg is an Italian brand that pioneered the fun-look, serious-performance fridge. With different lines to choose from, you can go for a sleek and modern locker-style number or the trademark 50′s-look model. I’m a fan of the latter, in white or cream.

An industrial-style fridge is always going to be a classic, and with good reason. Stainless steel works with many different interior styles, and adds a professional touch to a kitchen. I like the styles offered by German brand Miele, particularly the Grand Froid style, which would work for a large family.

Futuristic styles can be fun, too. The new Samsung by Gro fridge can be used horizontally or vertically, and the space-age styling would complement a super-modern, minimalist kitchen.

Probably the gold standard for designer refrigerators, Italian brand Meneghini makes unique models inspired by vintage iceboxes. Nigella Lawson has the cream one shown below, though I’ve got a soft spot for the tall, slim red model. Available to purchase at Robeys, the price (over 36K for the deluxe model) may make you think twice.

Cool Kitchen: Modern Luxe

I was recently turned on to Swedish mag Elle Interiör via a post at Decor8. Though it’s another one that I can’t actually read (it seems like all my favourite mags are foreign, lately), the photos are gorgeous, in true Swedish style.

This kitchen is a little more grown-up and elegant than my tastes usually run, though I was still drawn to it immediately. It’s got the clean, white tiled look I love, with touches of stainless steel and wood for added interest.

Modern Luxe

The real success of this space is in the luxurious details. The marble counter top could make a convert of butcher block-loving me, and all the candlesticks add a certain ambiance. There’s even an aristocratic-looking portrait leaning against the backsplash. The glass-fronted cabinets are one of my favourite touches- check out the stunning silver locking mechanisms!

Modern Luxe

What do you think- does this space float your boat?

I was so happy to come across Kim Ludy’s Etsy shop trampoline this morning. I was in the mood for a little escape, and Kim’s lovely photos have a way of telling a story, making their subject seem like just the treasure you’ve been looking for. Observe, my friends:

Photo find: Simply Breakfast

Ok, so Jennifer Causey‘s Simply Breakfast blog isn’t exactly a “find”. Her daily and atmospheric photos of mouth-watering breakfasts are the stuff of internet legend, after all. But that doesn’t mean we can’t enjoy some on this lovely Friday morning, does it? Have a great weekend, everybody!
