Flickr finds: The Haunted Kitchen

Well, maybe not really haunted. But some of these spaces, both abandoned and used regularly, look sort of creepy, no? Happy Friday and Happy Hallowe’en, everybody!

The light in My Creepy Kitchen by rickyaustin reminds me of a horror film:

I think the Severalls Kitchen, by artwork_rebel, is pretty terrifying:

Cosy perhaps, but there’s still something off about The Kitchen Sink by Wonderlane:

Home Inspiration: Gossip Girl

Firstly, a confession: I, Ele, watch and enjoy a shallow, melodramatic and at times ludicrous prime-time TV show aimed at the teenage set. So sue me.

Now that that’s out of the way, a second note: Please forgive the poor quality of the images in today’s post. It’s hell finding good screenshots, isn’t it?

Yes, Gossip Girl. The CW show about the lives of Manhattan’s young, wealthy elite, full of twisted love triangles, buried secrets, sexual tension and scandals-a-plenty. But please believe me, I don’t watch it for that stuff. Well maybe a tiny part of me does, but mainly I watch for the eye candy. Beautiful people, New York City, incredible fashion and inspiring interiors. It’s true; after the MCM gorgossity of Mad Men, this show has some of the best set design around (see this portfolio for some examples). While it’s all covetable, I’m going to stay somewhat on track here, and show you around the show’s kitchens.

The Bass/van der Woodsen penthouse is chic, modern and pure Upper East Side luxe. The kitchen in this apartment is a surprisingly modest size (I can’t imagine that anybody living here would do much cooking, after all), and has a clean, minimalist feel. I especially like the sliding blue panels and the open wood shelving (photos from this post at Apartment Therapy):

Gossip Girl

The dining area has a similar look, with a clean, mid-century feeling. Of course, it wouldn’t be the Upper East Side without a lush rug and an ornate chandelier:

Gossip Girl

The Waldorf home is more classic New York, all satin drapes and marble entrance halls. While that isn’t usually my style, I love the kitchen in this place. This image from Hooked on Houses shows off the white subway tile, marble countertops and industrial-looking appliances:

Gossip Girl

While no one can argue with the beauty of those spaces, it’s the trendy Brooklyn loft of the “underprivileged” Humphreys that gets the most love from me. Sure the exposed brick, random colours and retro paraphernalia might be cliché, but they’re good ones. I love the wall colour, open storage and cool pendant lamps in the kitchen:

The dining area is just as cool, relying on what looks like old diner booths for seating:

Until next time,
xoxo

Pedlars

Several weeks ago, I was browsing in Selfridges when I came across an small area, near the kitchen shop, which was laden with cool housewares, accessories and vintage pieces. It turns out to be a Pedlars concession, which opened in July of this year. Pedlars is a family-owned interiors company based in Scotland, with shops in London, Birmingham and Wales. They carry a mix of new items and vintage, all with a quirky charm and trendy feel.

I urge you to check our their online shop, which is full to bursting with great products for you and your home. Here are some of my favourites, all from the kitchen section (naturally) of the site.

I like the retro kitsch factor of oil cloth tablecloths, and this one is made perfectly modern with a trendy deer print:

Pedlars

There’s something utterly fabulous about this Gold Ice Cream Bowl and Spoon. I’d love to eat anything out of it, to be honest:

Pedlars

I like that these Coloured Knives come with guards, always useful for those of us who store such things in a drawer:

Pedlars

This porcelain Flour Bag Container would look great next to the stove, holding wooden spoons and other utensils:

Pedlars

I like the look of this retro Wall Mounted Bottle Opener. I’d like to have one outside (if I had an outside) for barbeques and such:

My favourite item might just be this traditional Oak Roller Towel Holder. What a great accessory for a modern-retro kitchen:

Cool Kitchen: Ina Garten’s Barn

Ina Garten's Barn

Yup, it’s another oldie-but-goodie today. I was reminded of Ina Garten‘s lovely barn kitchen by my good friend Larissa, when she commented on my post about the Something’s Gotta Give kitchen a few weeks ago.

The celebrated chef and food writer Ina Garten (otherwise known as the Barefoot Contessa) built this “barn” on the grounds of her East Hampton property as an office/guest house/workspace for herself. It’s somewhere to entertain, film her television programs and generally escape to. In design, it’s similar to the Something’s Gotta Give kitchen (white cabinets, dark countertops, stainless steel), but if I’m honest, I prefer Ina’s take on the look. It’s crisper, cleaner, and the whole “modern rustic” vibe is so my style.

Etsy find: Bridbird

Happy Monday everybody! Why not warm up to the week with these lovely illustrations from Bridbird. I stumbled across Bridget‘s shop this morning, and found her lovely prints, cards and fridge magnets, all foodie-themed and completely covetable. My favourites are the spices but I wouldn’t say no to any on my kitchen wall.

Photo finds: A Southern Thanksgiving

I’m abandoning my usual Friday Flickr update for some lovely food photography today. I’ve never had an American Thanksgiving, and I’ve most definitely never had a Southern one, but these photos from Country Living make me think I might be missing out. I love the colours and the presentation here, which perfectly evoke the elegance and cosiness of the holiday season. Happy Friday, everybody!

Home Inspiration: Ode to Aga

Though it might surprise you, my dream kitchen doesn’t have a modern, shiny induction worktop, or even a stainless steel gas range. No, my cooking contraption of choice would be a classic British Aga (white or bottle green, please). While actually cooking with it might take some getting used to, I’m already adapted to the look- traditional, cosy country living.

Not that all Aga-bedecked kitchens are cutesy and twee, though. This country classic is also at home in a more modern setting, as some of these photos show.

I love the simplicity and retro feel of this kitchen from Living etc. The massive school clock on the wall is the icing on the cake:

Ode to Aga

In this room from the same source, the Aga is set into a more traditional nook, though the overall look is still modern. The blue contrast tile and mustard stools add some pops of colour:

Ode to Aga

This Shaker kitchen, found on house to home, is pure country cute. I like the green tiles, and think that the black range looks modern next to them:

Ode to Aga

House to home also offers up this space, which at first glance is so not my style. But if you cleared the mantle and subbed another colour tile, I’d be all over this:

Ode to Aga

The black range doesn’t dominate too harshly in this room, from Coastal Living. Instead, it looks right at home in the modest, rustic space:

There isn’t much not to love in this kitchen from Plain English. The big oak table, farmhouse sink, hanging pot rack- the cream Aga blends in perfectly:

Finally! Anthropologie in London

I arrived home from my vacation yesterday, exhausted and freezing, to some wonderful news: London’s first Anthropologie shop is finally opening. The Regent Street flagship is set to open its doors on Oct. 23rd (tomorrow!), meaning the American brand’s boho-chic clothing, accessories and home decor will at long last be available on this side of the pond.

Anthropologie is one of my first ports of call on my yearly trips to the States, so I can’t wait to check it out here in London. I’m not sure I’ll be brave enough for the shop until the fever dies down, but luckily the website is already up and running. Check out my favourite kitchen-related products.

I love pretty rolling pins, and this Bird-In-Hand one is super pretty:

Anthropologie

This trio of handmade Olivewood Spoons looks lovely. I’d like a small one for my salt pig:

Anthropologie

There’s a great selection of dishtowels, and I like this Sweet Stack one:

Anthropologie

The Digit Spice Jar is cute and practical. I’d love it for bay leaves, cinnamon sticks or other irregularly-shaped spices:

Anthropologie

It was difficult to settle on a favourite coaster (the Slate ones are really fun), but I just fell for the designs on the Mallorca set:

Anthropologie

Crochet Collage Tablecloths have such a pretty, vintage quality to them. I’d try to DIY this, if only I had an abundance of doilies:

Kitchenisms on holiday

I’m off on holiday tomorrow; ten days of family, relaxation, and wonderful food. My trip back home covers both Canadian Thanksgiving and a good friend’s wedding, so I’ll be enjoying myself. Don’t despair though- I’ll be back with more Kitchenisms on the 19th.

Look: Fred & Friends Products

A friend tipped me off to the Fred & Friends brand last week. I’ve seen some of their products in shops, but never paid close attention to them before now. Unique, quirky and often ridiculous (in a good way), this company makes home products that are guaranteed to put a smile on your face. Check out some of my favourites from their website.

Equal Measure is the product that opened my eyes to this brand. At its simplest, it’s just a large glass measuring jug- but it’s also fun, educational, and makes you think:

Fred & Friends Products

Another measuring product, M-Cups is based on Russian matryoshka dolls. Not only are they adorable, but the idea is practical and space-saving, too:

Fred & Friends Products

I know this looks a little far-out, but trust me: I have a silicone brush, and I use it all the time. Twiggy just looks more fun:

Fred & Friends Products

The only thing I don’t like about Snap-a-Party is that it’s a one-time-use item. How fun for a picnic, though- there’s even chopsticks in there!

Fred & Friends Products

It might be difficult to clean, but I love the sculptural quality of the Spilt Milk cereal bowl:

Fred & Friends Products

Another fun container, Unzipped could work for a lot of things. I can even see it as a lovely vase with some fresh flowers:
