Cool Kitchen: Freshly Painted

Great minds must think alike, because the space I had planned for this week’s cool kitchen was featured just yesterday on The Kitchn. Originally posted as a Before & After on Design*Sponge a couple weeks ago, Sabrina’s kitchen has been on my mind since then.

Cool Kitchen: Freshly Painted

Not only was the transformation of this space amazing (be sure to click the link and see the “before”), but the kitchen itself is pretty damn gorgeous, too. I love the different shades used for the upper and lower cupboards, and how they work with the accessories in the space.

You can see more photos of this space at Sabrina’s blog, too.

Etsy find: Working Woman

Etsy‘s working woman sells archival-quality prints of her watercolour paintings, as well as original works. Most of the paintings are food-related in some way, and though the style is a little out of my box, they have a lovely quality to them. Check out some of my favourites from her shop.

Home Inspiration: Galley Kitchens

If you ask most people what their least favourite type of kitchen is, I’d wager that long, narrow galley styles would be the answer. Galleys abound where I live in the UK; they’re the norm in all the Victorian terrace houses around here. Personally I much prefer a large, open-plan room, but it’s not always possible to have that in every house. Luckily, it is possible to have a beautiful, modern galley-style kitchen, as the following spaces show.

I’ve always liked the floor in this kitchen, which I found at Brown Button. The horizontal stripes make the space feel wider, and are a nice take on the retro checkerboard look:

Sleek design makes the most of the available space in this modern galley, from Living etc:

You can’t see the other side of this kitchen, from Canadian House & Home, but I like what I do see. The quirky objects and bright touches bring character to the minimalist design:

This shorter, mini-galley is modern and pristine. I found it on Apartment Therapy and loved the open shelving and calming colours:

Also from Apartment Therapy, this kitchen is cheerful and traditional. I love the ceiling-height units, and all the bright touches:

I think the pale, soothing colour of the units in this kitchen from house to home create more space, as do the curved countertops:

Cool Kitchen: Pasta Factory Chic

Given the positive response to my posts on loft and industrial spaces, I thought I’d try a hybrid of sorts for today’s cool kitchen. This wonderful room is actually in a converted pasta factory in Marseille, France. (Don’t  you love the idea of living in a pasta factory?!) I first saw it last week at The Kitchn, but the whole house has been featured on other design blogs.

It’s no mystery why; this space is wonderful! The rich colours are subtly atmospheric, and all the galvanized steel makes for a refreshing change from stainless. I especially like the mesh cupboard fronts and the quirky details- like the lamp next to the stove and the ornate picture frames. I think taking items outside their normal context creates a sense of fun, and gives a room character.

Don’t forget to check out The Kitchn’s post on this room, and the whole house at Loft Life.

Etsy finds: wapa

It’s another pottery day around here, and I’m especially loving the porcelain pieces of Etsy shop wapa. Designed in Israel, this collection of jewelry and homewares has a certain ethereal quality. Here are my favourite kitchen-friendly pieces.

This set of two Walk the Line grooved bowls caught my eye immediately. The shape is beautiful and the uses many:

The P-Cup has the most lovely lace-like surface design. Suitable for hot and cold beverages, I think it would be particularly perfect for some hot chocolate:

With the same delicate floral pattern, this Square Bowl would be ideal for fruit or bread:

This Textured Bag could be used just about anywhere, but I’d love to see it on a kitchen windowsill, holding some potted herbs:

Another go-anywhere item, the Tea Light Holders are especially beautiful:

Home Inspiration: Industrial Kitchens

The polar opposite of all those country, coastal and cottage kitchens, the industrial-style kitchen has a charm all its own. Usually so-called because of the presence of restaurant-style fittings, open shelving and generous amounts of stainless steel, industrial kitchens aren’t to everyone’s tastes. They are however a wonderful space in which to work, and if these photos are anything to go by, beautiful to look at too.

I love this space from house to home. The white tile and steel island are set off beautifully by the pendant lamps and industrial fixtures:

The Kitchn recently featured this industrial-style space. It’s from Martha Stewart‘s NYC kitchen in the 1980′s, but I think it looks surprisingly modern:

From Canadian House & Home, this kitchen is what I’d call “vintage industrial”, and proof that not all industrial spaces have to be all metal, all the time. I’m loving the professional-style range hood and green light fixtures:

I like this kitchen from Marie Claire Maison, which despite its utilitarian leanings, has a charming country feel:

I guess the French like their industrial style, because this room is from the same source. With all the hanging pans, shiny surfaces and professional appliances, this place has a real “pro chef” vibe:

Cool Kitchen: Mexican Cheer

I’m well aware that this isn’t the kind of slick, modern kitchen that I usually feature here. But when I saw this room on The Kitchn last month it grabbed me immediately, and hasn’t let go since.

A rental kitchen in central Mexico, this space looks like a bright, functional and cheerful place to work. I love the open shelving, the practical wooden work surface and the lovely blue floor. I think it’s refreshingly honest to see stuff in a kitchen, rather than hidden away behind cupboard doors. Best of all, it looks as though the skirt below the sink can be changed for a whole new look- genius!

Be sure to check out the original post at The Kitchn for the “before” photos, too.

Etsy find: Slow Lane Lost & Found

Happy Monday, everybody!

Let’s kick off the week with some Etsy goodness, shall we? Slow Lane is a shop which sells “retro and vintage finds for happy spaces”. The selection is small but well-edited, and I’m loving some of their kitchen and decor items.

I immediately fell for these retro mugs. The mix of colours is gorgeous, so while they’re sold individually, I’d take the lot:

This set of four mini bowls is lovely, I especially like the coloured insides:

I love these vintage glass decanters for liquor; they’d be perfect for my home bar. They come with two double-sided “necklaces” to appropriately mark the contents:

My parents have a set of 60′s glass dessert bowls a bit like these. I used to think they were hideous, but I’d happily take them now:
