Cool Kitchen: La Finca

I came across some photos of private Spanish home La Finca yesterday. Designed by uxus and originally posted by Design*Sponge, the interiors throughout the house are lovely and inspiring. Though you really only get a glimpse of the kitchen, I still thought it was a space worth sharing.

I love the cool, Mediterranean vibe here. The beamed ceiling, whitewashed walls and complete lack of “decoration” make the space relaxing and serene. The long table (and mismatched chairs- love!) makes me think of leisurely meals with family and friends. Also, how cool is that fridge in the wall?!

Etsy find: Esther Coombs

I was so happy to find the shop of illustrator Esther Coombs on Etsy. Most shops I feature are American, so to come across home-grown UK talent is definitely something special. Esther applies her modern ink drawings to vintage ceramics, resulting in a unique and whimsical pieces. Here are a few of my favourite finds from her shop:

This My Garden Cake Stand is perfect for serving up some sweet treats:

The candy-coloured Chequer Street Tea Set is covered with little scenes of English life, and is one of my favourites in the shop:

Another favourite is this Paris Street Cake Plate. I love the image of the old fashioned streetlight; it’s almost too pretty to cover up, even with cake:

In staying with the Paris theme, how about this Metro Tea Cup and Saucer? I’m liking the blue colour and moody imagery- it seems perfect for a nighttime cuppa:

I like these cute Seed Markers for the garden. If I had outdoor growing-space I’d definitely be buying some:

Also check out Esther’s website and her blog, too.

Flickr finds: Morning Tea

Like I’ve said before, I’m more tea sipper than coffee guzzler. I like to start every day with a hot cup of tea, and from the looks of these Flickr images, I’m not alone. Happy Friday, everybody!

I like the look of this muffin and tea in the studio, from jodigreen:

This photo of syntheticpanda‘s morning tea, is so evocative and pretty:

Perfect for summer, I like batetoon‘s Morning pages, with an iced tea:

Inspiration: Home Bars

Having a home bar is probably last on my (practicality-driven) wish list, but I admit to loving the idea of them. Options range from a full-on wet bar to a simple tray, but I have a certain fondness for the bar cart. They bring to mind images of 1940′s Hollywood films and cheesy American soap operas. (And Gilmore Girls reruns, but you won’t hold that against me, will you?) No matter what kind you go for, home setups like these never fail to evoke hospitality, old-fashioned glamour, and perhaps a touch of intrigue.

I found this old Domino image at this is glamorous. Spare and minimalist, it has a wonderful mix of masculine and feminine elements:

This bar cart is classic and colourful, found via Hostess with the Mostess:

For the crafty among us, I like this restored 1970′s airplane galley cart, from the Telstar Logistics photostream:

I love this simple little table, from an Apartment Therapy home tour. It works so well with the wallpaper behind it:

Also from Apartment Therapy, this DIY idea is pretty cool. Turn an old bookcase into a bar, complete with professional glass holders and wine cradles:

This bar vignette from Country Living is adorable and practical. I love the use of the wicker tray, and the old rake:

Look: Ceramic Kitchen Radio

I’ve got a little extra product-postage for you today, also via Dezeen. This Ceramic Kitchen FM Radio by Israeli company Studio Lama is so gorgeous I couldn’t resist. Resembling retro food canisters with the wooden “lids” as dials, it’s also available with different glazes and motifs. I love the one with the flowers!

Look: Elevate by Joseph Joseph

One product you’ll never see me feature here at Kitchenisms is a spoon rest. Not only do I hate single-use gadgets cluttering my kitchen, but I find them cutesy, fiddly and plain infuriating. My dislike of the things runs so deep that when The Kitchn had a “Hot or Not” feature on spoon rests yesterday, I felt compelled to chime in (you can see my scathing comment three down).

So I was happy to see, when browsing Dezeen this morning, that one of my favourite kitchen product companies, Joseph Joseph, has come up with an alternative. Elevate by Gillian Westley is a line of silicone cooking utensils with central pivots and weighted handles, designed to keep mess off your work surface. While I love the idea, I’m not too crazy about the colours, so here’s hoping Joseph Joseph expands this range in the future.

Cool Kitchen: Silverlake

I seem to be re-posting a lot of spaces from The Kitchn lately. My limited view isn’t on purpose, honest- they just keep showing the greatest kitchens! When I saw Allison and Paul’s Silverlake Kitchen last week, I loved it immediately.

I could go into my usual “Why this works” spiel now, but it would be a long list. The warm wood and cool subway tile, the huge storage island, the light fixtures and mismatched dining chairs… I could go on. I especially like the windows tucked between and above the cabinets. They bring in lots of light, making the space bright and airy but warm and inviting at the same time.

Check out all the kitchen photos here, and the rest of Allison and Paul’s home here.

Etsy find: Adventures in Vintage

One of my favourite shops on Etsy is Adventures in Vintage, which stocks vintage housewares and decor items. The selection is unusually well-edited and freakishly in line with my personal tastes- there’s barely anything here that I wouldn’t love to have in my own home. Check out my favourites here.

This vintage Coca-Cola crate would make fantastic kitchen storage- I can see it hanging on the wall, full of spice jars:

Simply put, I love the colours in this Ceramic Tea Set

This metal personal Porta File is describes as “huge”, granted, but I still think it’s pretty cool. If you can find the space for it, I think it would make good recipe storage, or else an unusual bread bin:

I can’t say I eat popcorn that often, but if I had this retro Bowl and Canister Set, I might reconsider that:

I’ve never even heard of a bun warmer before, but I couldn’t resist including this Warmer Basket, if only for the awesome colours and textures:

Flickr finds: From the Garden

With only enough counter space for a small pot of chives and another of (rather sad) basil, growing my own food is still a far-off dream of mine. Luckily we’ve got Flickr, and I can live vicariously through others. Happy Friday!

Call me weird, but I like it when my veg still have dirt on them. Carrots and tomatoes from stevendepolo

Home Inspiration: Dining Rooms

I found myself a bit bored with the kitchen today (I know- shock!) so decided to turn my attention to its close cousin, the dining room, instead. Personally, I can take or leave a formal dining room- it’s about as low on my home priority list as his-and-her-sinks (can anyone explain to me the obsession with his-and-her sinks?), and I’d much rather have a big, eat-in kitchen.

Some of these spaces, however, are lovely. Simple, casual and eclectic, these aren’t the stuffy, characterless dining rooms of decades past. In fact, I wouldn’t mind leaving my dream eat-in kitchen (occasionally) to dine in one of these.

From the always-inspirational photostream of sarahleeab, I like the mishmash of this space quite a bit. All the blues and greens, as well as (what looks like) a bench against the wall keep it far from stuffy:

inspiration: dining rooms

This room from the same source has a sort of “modern farmhouse” thing going on, which I love:

inspiration: dining rooms

I like this space from Living etc, which is grown-up but fun at the same time. The round table, mismatched chairs and chandelier give it an eclectic feeling:

inspiration: dining rooms

The modern furniture, restrained colour scheme and blackboard wall keep this dining room, from Canadian House & Home, from being stuffy:

inspiration: dining rooms

I love this Parisian dining nook from Marie Claire Maison. The yellow seat cushions and wicked light fixture are just enough to give the otherwise white space a chic vintage feel:

inspiration: dining rooms

From the portfolio of interior stylist Lucyina Moodie, this room feels much more traditional, but I still like it. All the white makes the brown-and-navy colour scheme seem fresh:
