Cool Kitchen: Grey Industrial

Yesterday The Kitchn blogged about a Washington, DC space that was so cool, I couldn’t resist sharing it here. (It’s actually just a pantry and not a full-on kitchen, but the decor would be easily used in either.)

Since my post last week about black kitchens, I’ve been gravitating more toward darker rooms with pop. This space definitely fits the bill: white trim and colourful art against moody grey walls. I love the industrial bookcases and filing cabinets: technically in the dining room, they really seem part of the space.

Colour in the Kitchen: Black

Ok, spare me the whole “black isn’t a colour” spiel. It might not be, but it sure does look great in these modern kitchens. Cooler  and edgier than white, black is dramatic and timeless. Here are some of my favourite kitchens in this dark non-colour.

From sarahleeab‘s photostream, this kitchen is minimalist and surprisingly light:

I like the mix of industrial and country going on in this scan, from the now-defunct Domino mag, via Tammy Manet‘s photostream:

From another magazine no-long-with-us (House and Garden) and found on Farmhouse Modern, I adore this elegant space

Not just black, but a mix of dark shades, this kitchen from Canadian House & Home manages to mix elegant, funky, retro and modern into one neat package:

From the same source, this space is slightly more traditional, with a classic mix of black, white and stainless steel:

Cool Kitchen: Grey in L.A.

When I’m craving inspiration of the interior kind, I love browsing the Sneak Peeks over at Design*Sponge. There’s never a shortage of girly, vintage-inspired Brooklyn kitchens to feast my eyes on. Every now and then, though, you come across something entirely different- like the slightly masculine LA loft of jewelry designer Melissa McClure

I love how the stainless steel shelves and white stove look against the grey walls- restrained but impactful at the same time. With this subdued colour scheme, even the open shelving and knickknacks on the stove don’t look like clutter. The addition of few red items here and there ends up looking like a purposeful design decision. Lovely, no?

Check out all the photos and read the article here.

Colour in the kitchen: Yellow

Yellow seems a natural choice for a kitchen- it’s cheerful, calm and soothing, and like other citrus shades, is said to stimulate the appetite. Depending on the shade and application, yellow can be soft and vintage, as in a country kitchen, or bright and bold in an urban setting.

From Living etc, a modern galley kitchen looks sweet and charming with pale yellow units and paint:

I love the strong shade used on the wall in this kitchen, from Marie Claire Maison:

Instead of hitting you over the head with it, the cream tones and yellow chairs in this space from Coastal Living use yellow in a subtle way:

This space from kitchenideas.com.au manages to look both modern and sweet at the same time, thanks to simple white legged units and a cheerful accent wall:

House & Home’s Canadian Kitchens

Canadian House & Home is a great interiors magazine back home. As a self-deprecating Canadian, I admit that it constantly surprises me just how nice some of the images in this publication are. But browsing the galleries on their site, it can’t really be denied. For a bit of patriotic eye-candy, check out these gorgeous Canadian kitchens:

Cool (part of a) Kitchen: Industrial Cheer

I’m not sure if this qualifies as a complete Cool Kitchen as we can’t see the entire room, but I love this photo of Flickr user linsmika‘s kitchen wall. The super-organized setup looks pleasingly industrial, thanks to all the stainless steel and glass storage jars. The touches of red take away any chance of it feeling sterile, and make the whole place seem cheery and bright.

Colour in the kitchen: Blue

While purple and red aren’t exactly my cup of tea, blue is a colour I can definitely get on board with. Meant to inspire creativity (always a good thing in the kitchen), it can be bright, modern and cheerful or calm, cool and sophisticated. Also, blue is decidedly non-polarizing. You’d be hard pressed to find someone who didn’t think these kitchens were gorgeous, wouldn’t you?

I love how the cabinets and walls work together in this scan from sarahleeab‘s photostream. The contrasting orange accessories are the icing on the cake:

Originally from the now-defunct Domino magazine, and found on Laissezfaire, I like the colour used in this space. Light blue can be very elegant, as demonstrated by the marble-and-chandelier style here:

Navy is an unusual choice, more modern and subdued than the brighter shades. I like this Miele kitchen from 03interiors

Cool Kitchen: Dwell July/August

We’re still waiting for the July/August issue of Dwell to hit our doorstep here in London, and frankly, it’s beginning to irritate me. Sick of the suspense, I headed over to their website this morning to see what I’ve been missing. What I found was a slideshow and article about the LA home of architect Jeremy Levine. The style is SoCol Spanish meets ultra-modern, and I love what I see:

Besides the obviously wonderful combination of warm wood, crisp white and touches of black, I think this kitchen works so well because of all the horizontal and vertical lines at play. The wooden ceiling and floor increase the sense of horizontal space, but thanks to all the tall, white-framed cupboards, the feeling isn’t at all stifling. I like all the built-in nooks and shelves, which are not only practical, but draw your eye across the width of the room.

Cool Kitchen: hownowdesign’s functional vintage

Remember this photo? It’s probably one of my all-time favourites from Flickr. So when I came across the kitchen all those bundts hail from, in hownowdesign‘s around the house photoset, I couldn’t wait to share.

kitchen four

Though decidedly vintage in its leanings, this kitchen is actually quite spare and functional. The only touches of decoration come from the bundt pans on the wall and the paper-lined, glass-fronted cupboards, both of which are practical storage solutions, too. I particularly like the addition of a utilitarian storage unit (from a university surplus sale), which I think adds a masculine touch.

Colour in the kitchen: Red

Red is a natural choice for a kitchen. Symbolizing life and passion, it creates an energetic space, and apparently stimulates the appetite as well. Personally, I find too much red makes me a tad crazy, but I love it for details. Here are some of my favourite red kitchens from around the web.

In a gorgeous mid-century Eichler house, a neutral kitchen gets a bright red backsplash, from larryncelia:

The paint lends the colour in this retro kitchen from Living etc, meaning it can be changed on a whim:

Again from Living etc, this is red my way. Retro-modern details in a neutral space:
