Etsy find: girlscantell

Happy Monday, everybody! Today kicks off the start of a new posting schedule for me at Kitchenisms. From now on I’ll be posting once a day, seven days a week. Each day has its own dedicated topic, and from here on out, Mondays mean Etsy.

I came across girlscantell when searching for oven mitts. I love the hand-printed, diagram-like illustrations and the unique feel of the pieces. There’s a lot here for food-and-kitchen freaks, so read on for my picks.

The oven mitts are all great, but I particularly like this one, with a sewing machine diagram:

I also really like the felt coasters, which comes in sets of four. This one is perfect for food lovers:

This canning diagram tote is perfect for an eco-friendly trip to the farmer’s market:

The napkins come in sets of two, and I’m loving this vintage typewriters design:

As for placemats, I really this version with a diagram of a vintage camera:

Etsy finds: Canadian shops

Happy Canada Day! Yes, it’s that time of year again, when a young Canuck’s fancy turns to painting maple leafs on her face, drinking pints of Keith’s and eating beavertails. To those of you who have no idea what I’m talking about, July 1st is Canada’s birthday. And I’m Canadian. So, um, bear with me for one day, okay?

Ok, moving swiftly on. I thought to kick things off today, I’d round up a few of my favourite Canadian food-focused shops on Etsy

Vancouver-based kootsac describes its handmade sacs as “the original reusable bulk food bags”. Made of natural silk, cotton, or rip-stop nylon, these lightweight sacs are perfect for bulk food shopping:

StudioÉLAN is the online shop of Ontario potter Eleanor Hendriks. From egg cups to serving bowls, there is lots here for pottery-lovers:

elan two
Atelier Eva Juilet is the work of a Montreal-based artist who creates charming foodie prints in both French and English. I think a framed series of these would look lovely in a small kitchen:

Over in Nova Scotia, photographer Shelagh Duffett sells her prints at Broomhill Pictures. Of course they’re not all food-related, but they’re beautiful just the same:

Etsy find: skinnylaminx

Heather is an illustrator, designer and writer living in Cape Town, South Africa. Her Etsy shop skinnylaminx sells a fantastic variety of screen printed tea towels (now just $0.50 for shipping!), cushions and fabric yardage. Her handmade prints are charming, and here are some of my favourites.

The LAVA tea towel in petrol is inspired by drawings of mid-century ceramics:

I love the colours, not to mention the adorable print, in the Colt circles in seafoam tea towel:

colts

Hilarious and useful, the I Wish we had IKEA tea towel, in grey:

Based on a paper cutout design, the Specimens table napkin in yellow

I really like this Spoons apron in red, both for the cheery design and the practical shape:

Etsy find: CUR8TOR shop by studiosmith

I found the CUR8TOR Shop while browsing Etsy for vintage pitchers. Studiosmith stocks a nice selection of mid century modern art, ceramics and homewares. Here are some of my favourite friday picks.

I like the daisy pattern on this coffee pitcher. It’s the first piece that caught my eye and looks like it’s in great condition:

This Guildcraft tin is lovely, and would make a wonderful gift for someone (filled with home-baked goodies, of course):

An 11-piece Coffee/Tea set in great nick, with style to spare:

These Swedish compote bowls are my favourite because they’re so interesting. You don’t normally see mid-century design with such intricate detail:

Etsy finds: recipe cards

I know most people don’t really need recipe cards these days, keeping most favourite recipes in computer bookmarks as we do. Still, there’s something nice about a box of index-size cards to hold and pass on. If I can’t convince you, maybe this selection of adorable sets from Etsy will.

This modern blue design from up up creative is simple and straightforward:

card one

The Fork and Spoon set from WhiskerGraphics is actually a downloadable pdf, so there’s no writing involved:

card two

From Daily Sip Studios, I like this set of 24 Modern Flower recipe cards, which have room for loads of info and can be personalized, too:

card three

The animal lover in me loves these quirky Dog Silhouette Recipe Cards from browndogboutique. You can even choose your favourite dog silhoutte from a range of 24, and your ink colour:

I love the simplicity of these Mixer Recipe Cards, from HelloPaper

Etsy find: Upcycled glass

I’m a huge fan of reusing food containers. I store grains in glass passata bottles, and my current drinking glasses are actually old Nutella jars. (I forced myself to go through six of them to get a set. Tough, I know.) So I love what Etsy shop YAVAglass is doing: up-cycling old glass bottles into fun and quirky drinking glasses. My top three picks from their shop have surprisingly different looks.

One one hand, this set of four tumblers, upcycled from bottles of Boylan’s Root Beer. I love the fun, retro feel and think they’d be perfect for a summer barbeque:

glass one

On the other end of the scale, this set of ten glasses is surprisingly elegant. Made from old Cream Soda bottles, I somehow have no trouble imagining these as part of a sophisticated table setting:

glass two

And don’t forget the kids. This set of four, made from bottles of Bubble Up soda, look like they’d make great juice glasses:

glass three

Etsy finds: milk glass

I don’t think I’d ever even heard of milk glass, the “poor man’s porcelain”, until I came across it on Etsy. On seeing it for the first time, my first thought was What is that? followed swiftly by OMG I need some!

While the designs can be a bit over-the-top in terms of their ornateness, the pristine white colour keeps things simple and perfectly in tune with contemporary interior design. I’ve never really been a collector of anything, but for this I could change my tune. Here are my picks from the huge variety of milk glass on Etsy

This trio of single-bud vases from flores del sol look lovely together:

pedestal bowl from 1975, from Bright Wall Vintage

milk glass two

I especially love this large ruffled cake plate, sold by High Street Market:

milk glass three

From buy golly Miss Molly, this large pot would be great for cut flowers, planting or storage:

milk glass four

Another great trio, this time of little bowls from Atty’s Vintage

milk glass five

My favourite might just be this pair of English hobnail lamps, sold by (appropriately enough) My Milk Glass Shop. I think they’d look fab with a modern blue shade:

Etsy find: I Love Your Utensils

Etsy seller dazeychic sells whimsical limited-edition prints in her studio mela shop. I’ve fallen for this I Love Your Utensils set, which includes prints of spoons, forks, spatulas and egg beaters (my favourite). The prints are also available individually.

Product round-up: Picnic baskets

What with all the nice weather we’ve been having here in London, I’ve got picnics on the brain. While blankets, mini-grills and fancy crockery are all optional, one thing you definitely need for a picnic (besides food, of course) is a great basket.

If you’re into the classic wicker look, you can’t go wrong with a vintage-feel, floral-lined number from Cath Kidston:

picnic one

This retro hamper from Etsy seller ModmargeFineFinds looks cool and super-roomy:

picnic two

Also from Etsy, this burlap bucket from designsmayamade is made from a recycled coffee sack, and would be a great lightweight option:

picnic three

For a non-traditional idea, I love the colours in this 3-tier melamine tiffin box from Habitat

picnic fourUnderstated style for a price, a modern picnic set from Heath Ceramics

picnic five

I think my favourite, though, is the Blyton tin picnic hamper, sold by Heals. It’s the perfect mix of retro and modern, and the colours just say summer:

Etsy find: agreensleeve

Out of all the sandwich and snack bags to be found on Etsy, I like agreensleeve‘s the best. Her nylon-lined food bags are machine washable, come in a huge selection of fun fabrics, and are eco-friendly to boot.

SnackSleeve in Bird Spice:
